The mystery behind the murder of Ganajagarn Mancha district organiser and teacher Zia Uddin Jakaria alias Babu has been unearthed two years after the incident, says the district police. Three people have also been arrested over the killing. M Asaduzzaman, superintendent of police (SP) in Bogra, disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the SP office conference room yesterday noon. The arrestees confessed to the murder and said they were following instructions of leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the police official said.
The arrestees are Mainur Islam Fakir, 21, son of Ibrahim Fakir of village Narchi Tarafdarpara of Sariakandi upazila, Mohsin Ali, 21, son of Mosarauf Hossain of village Kichak Satana of Shibganj upazila and Habibullah Nayeem, 19, son of Belal Hossain of village Sabujbag area in Bogra town. Arrestee Mainur Islam Fakir confessed to killing Zia Uddin before the Senior Judicial Court of Bogra yesterday, according to police. Police sources said Zia Uddin Jakaria alias Babu, 47, the Bogra district Ganajagarn Mancha organiser and lecturer of Mathematics at Sherpur Degree College, was hacked to death by unidentified men in front of Selim Hotel in the town on December 09, 2013 at around 9.00pm when he was returning home on foot. After local police failed to find any clue of the murder, the Detective Branch (DB) of Bogra police began investigating the murder. Sub Inspector (SI) of Bogra DB Khokon is currently the investigating officer in the murder case. The DB police said Bangladesh Jammat-e-Islami student wing Islami Chatra Shibir carried out the murder in a pre-planned manner.
The arrestees confessed to police that they killed Zia Uddin Jakaria following orders of two top district leaders of Islami Chatra Shibir. Police is now trying to arrest the two Shibir men who had planned and ordered the murder, the SP added.
The arrestees also confessed that the Shibir leaders had forced them into killing and others destructive activities like hartal, blockade, cocktail blast and patrol bomb blast, arson attack on vehicles during the Jamaat-Shibir called hartals from 2011. The arrestees said they blasted at least 400 crude bombs at many important locations in the town during the oppositions destructive programmes, police said. Inspector and in-charge of Bogra DB police Md Amirul Islam said they will produce the other two arrestees before the court and seek 10 days remand to extract more information.
