At least 12 people, including a union parishad chairman, were injured in a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League allegedly over party nomination for the upcoming union parishad elections at Mahishkur in Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district yesterday, reports UNB.
Local people said supporters of Nur Mohammad, president of Sreeula union unit of the ruling Awami League, equipped with sharp weapons swooped on the office of Abu Hena Shakilur Rahman, chairman of local union parishad, around 9 am.
The attackers hit him with sharp weapon following an enmity over getting nomination, leaving him critically injured, said sources.
Following the attack on the UP chairman Shakilur Rahman, supporters of both groups later attacked each other, leaving 11 more people from both sides injured in clashes.
Of the injured, six people, including Abu Hena, his son Shourav, Sirajul Islam, Shamim Hossain and Rabiul Islam, were rushed to Ashashuni upazila health complex and Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Getting information, a police team from the Ashashuni Police Station rushed to scene and brought the situation under control, said Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni Police.
When contacted over the incident, victim Abu Hena said he has got the nomination from the party ahead of the UP election.
His rival Nur Mohammad became furious over the issue and because of this, his men might have carried out the attack, Abu Hena alleged.
Meanwhile, Nur Mohammad alleged that supporters of Abu Hena suddenly attacked his men with sharp weapons without any provocations.
