Employees seek PM’s intervention

Leaders of Banglalink Employees' Union yesterday sought prime minister’s intervention to ensure their job security and an end to alleged threats by the private mobile phone operator's management.
“It is unlawful to sack employees by the private mobile phone operator's management as the union’s proposal remained under government jurisdiction,”  Banglalink employees came up with the remark at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital yesterday and placed nine-point demand.
Bakhtiar Hossain, general secretary of the union, said the mobile phone operator's management is indirectly intimidating the employees instead of solving the problem.
He said the union is under registration process and taking this in contemplation, the management may sit with us.  “We are waiting for meeting but management do not pay hid to this and following the situation we are seeking prime minister’s intervention” Hossain added.
The union locked horns on February 11 after the firing of engineer Shariful Islam allegedly for his involvement in organising the union.
The nine-point demand includes-- ensuring the registration of Banglalink Employees' Union as well as to stop the acts of intimidation, refrain from any actions that would delay or impair the lawful formation of the union.
They also demanded to reappoint the sacked employee Shariful Islam to his post, compensate the victim employee and union organising secretary Mostak Ahamd and arrange proper treatment for him, to ensure employees job security and an end to alleged threats by the private mobile phone operator's management.
Bakhtiar Hossain said the normal working environment of the company is being hampered and scaring situation are prevailing as Banglalink authority is trying to foil the union’s activities by intimidating and using illegal power.
