The newly raised fare for passengers and freight trains became effective from yesterday, following the second hike after three years.
Director General of Bangladesh Railway Md Amzad Hossain told UNB that the new railway fare with rise of 7.8 per cent has been effective from yesterday.
The fare was increased aiming to improve the service quality in the railways sector, he said.
The list of new fare was hanged at all the railway stations across the country as people bought train tickets four-five days ago, he added. However, there is no report of any chaos regarding the new fare, he claimed.
According to the railway sources, the train fare for Shobhon Class on the Dhaka-Chittagong route was raised to Tk285 from Tk 265 while the fare for Shobhon Chair was increased to Tk345 from Tk 320, for AC Chair the fare leaped up to Tk656 from Tk 610, for AC seat to Tk 788 from Tk 731 and for AC Berth to Tk 1189 from Tk1,093.
Besides, the fare for Shobhon Class on the Dhaka-Sylhet route leaped up to Tk285 from Tk 265, the fare for Shobhon chair went up to Tk 340 from Tk 320, for AC Chair it rose to Tk656 from Tk 610, for AC Seat to Tk 782 from Tk 736 and for AC Berth to Tk1,099.
The fare for Shobhon Class on the Dhaka-Khulna route was increased to Tk 420 from Tk 390, the fare for Shobhon Chair was hiked to Tk505 from Tk 465, for AC chair to Tk961 from Tk 891, for AC seat to Tk 1156 from Tk 1070 and for AC berth to Tk 1731 from Tk 1599. Besides, the fare for freight trains on the Dhaka-Chittagong route was raised to Tk9,700-Tk26,600 from Tk9,000- Tk2,100 earlier.
Earlier, the government had raised the train fare from 24 paisa to 36 paisa per kilometre in 2012, after 20 years.
