Teachers under the banner of the Bangladesh Satantra Ebtedayee Madrasa Shikkhok Samiti have been holding a sit-in since February 10, demanding salary in accordance with the national pay scale.
“My four-year-old son cries whenever he sees any street food vendor, but I can’t buy him anything as I don't have the money,” said Nasrin, headmistress of a madrasa at Shailkupa in Jhenidah. She is among those holding the sit-in in front of the National Press Club. “I am protesting as my family is hungry, cold and suffering from mosquito bites, but no government official or politician has offered help. We will not leave unless our demands are met,” Nasrin told The Independent.
Mokhlesur Rahman, secretary general of the association, told The Independent that there are 34,240 teachers in 6,848 ebtedayee madrasas across the country. Of them, only 6,076 get a monthly salary of Tk. 1,000. The remaining teachers have been deprived of any payment for the past 29 years. “The present government nationalised 36,193 primary schools. But madrasas don't get any funds, even though we teach our students the same way as teachers of nationalised primary schools do.
