The government has taken initiatives to construct an expressway between Dhaka and Chittagong to ensure movement of commuters within the shortest possible time, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said yesterday.
“Construction work of the four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong highway will be completed in May this year,” he told reporters after a coordination meeting on various development projects held at the secretariat. After the completion of the highway, work on the construction of the expressway over the existing Dhaka-Chittagong highway will start, the minister added.
“It is estimated that around Tk 70,000 crore would be needed to construct the expressway which will be 225km long,” Quader said in reply to a query. Besides, Shaheed Sheikh Kamal Bridge and Shaheed Sheikh Jamal Bridge on the Patuakhali-Kuakata road will be inaugurated for traffic movement on February 25, said the minister. The minister also briefed on various development projects taken by various departments under his ministry.
According to the minister, a total of 16 bridges of different sizes funded by Japan have already been completed in the Sylhet region. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to inaugurate the bridges on February 25,” Obaidul Quader said.
Among others, Road Transport and Bridges Secretary MAN Siddique, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Ibn Alam Hasan were present at the briefing.
