Election commissioner Md Shah Nawaz said yesterday (Wednesday) that a large number of armed Ansars, along with other law enforcers, will be deployed for the union parishad (UP) polls to ensure a peaceful environment.
“The police and Ansars will be there. As there are about 7,000 polling centres in the first phase of polling, the police, RAB and Ansars will not be enough. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will also have to be deployed,” he said. Shah Nawaz was talking to journalists at his office in the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital.
The commissioner said they are thinking of deploying more law enforcers compared to the recent municipal polls.
“In that case, a large number of armed Ansars will be needed,” he added.
Replying to a query on Army deployment for the UP polls, he said: “We did not do it during the municipal elections and the polls were held peacefully. The Army is called out only as the last resort. Such a situation does not exist. As the UP polls are held at the rural level, they are fought mostly among relatives. So, we think there will not be any major incident calling for deployment of the Army.”
The commissioner, however, said a final decision on law enforcers will be taken at the commission’s meeting.
