BCL activists assault scribe in Ctg

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists assaulted a photo journalist of the Bengali daily Prothom Alo, Jewel Shil, while he was taking photographs of an attack on a motorcyclist at Probortak circle in Chittagong yesterday.
Shil alleged that the attackers belonged to Chittagong Medical College’s (CMC's) BCL unit. They were led by Rashedul Islam, president of CMC’s BCL unit, he told police.
According to witnesses, BCL had brought out a procession from CMC premises at 2 pm yesterday. It was to protest against an assault on three BCL leaders following a clash with local people at Nasirabad in the city on Monday.
When the procession reached Probortak circle, the protesters blocked the road. An ambulance was stuck in the chaos, but the BCL activists made room for it to pass through. When a motorcyclist tried to follow the ambulance, the activists pounced on him and assaulted him.
“When I was taking photographs of the assault, six BCL activists, led by Rashed, attacked me. Nabid Anjum Tanvir, vice president of the CMC student council, was also present,” Shil said.
The assaulters took away the journalist’s camera and erased the photographs. They also allegedly confined him for around 20 minutes and tortured him.
Later, the CMC student council’s vice president admitted to the incident. “The journalist was confined as he had made a mistake. The picture was erased, but he was not tortured so much,” Tanvir told the media.
