Eight people were killed and 75 injured in separate road accidents in five districts yesterday.
In Comilla, three people were killed and four others were injured as a covered van hit them at Gauripur Bazar in Daudkandi upazila.
The identity of the deceased could not be immediately ascertained.
Officer-in-charge of Daudkandi highway police Abdul Awal said the accident took place when a covered van crashed on several pedestrians as its driver lost control around 12:30pm, leaving three people dead and four others injured at the scene.
Three of the injured were taken to a local hospital while the other was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the OC added.
In Patuakhali, two motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their vehicle at Shoula on the Baufal-Lohalia road in Sadar upazila.
Sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Masum said the speeding bus hit the motorbike from the opposite direction in the area around 9:30am, leaving the bike rider Faruk,28, and it co-rider Hareram,35, a teacher of Crokmahal Government Primary School in Baufal upazila, dead on the spot. Hareram was going to school on the hired motorcycle. Angered by the accident, local people and students of the school blocked the road vandalised the killer bus.
Informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
In Gopalganj, two siblings were killed and another was injured when a bus collided head-on with a private car at Majhigati on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Kashiani upazila. The deceased were Jamal Matubbar, 65, and his younger brother Badal Matubbar, residents of Shukrabad area in the capital city.
Sub-inspector of Bhanga highway police Mohsin Ali said the accident occurred when a bus hit a private car at about 1pm, leaving the car passengers dead on the spot and the driver injured.
The injured was sent to local hospital.
In Sylhet, a minor boy was killed when a private car ran over him on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway at Satmile area yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Saju Ahamed, 7, son of Kanai Miah of Paschimvag area in the city.
Police said the accident occurred when a private car ran over Saju while he was crossing the road with his mother, leaving him dead on the spot and his mother critically injured.
The injured Rahela Begum was sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital.
In Nilphamari, at least 70 people were injured as a picnic bus fell into a roadside ditch in Pagla Bazaar area in Domar upazila yesterday morning.
Police said the accident occurred when a Dinajpur-bound picnic bus from Panchagarh fell into a roadside ditch at about 11 am as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving 70 passengers of the bus injured.
