British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake has laid emphasis on further strengthening people-to-people contact saying the existing links play an important role in the ‘strong relationship’ shared by Bangladesh and the UK, reports UNB.
“Many of the community people in Sylhet have close business and family ties with the UK. These people-to-people links play an important role in the strong relationship shared by the UK and Bangladesh,” she said.
The British High Commissioner made the remark while concluding her two-day visit to Sylhet yesterday. It was her first tour outside Dhaka. During her visit, she held meetings with senior government officials, business leaders and hosted a reception for a cross-section of the local community, said a British High Commission press release.
“I’m committed to strengthening the bilateral relationship and looking forward to further developing our extensive cooperation,” Blake said. The British envoy said many British people with Bangladeshi heritage can trace their origin to this great region -- Sylhet. “I’m proud that this diaspora in the UK has been contributing to our economy, politics, culture and culinary industry over the years.”
