People of seven villages in Manikgan sadar upazila have set up an example by taking an initiative to build a concrete bridge over a canal at Palora Bholai Mollar Ghat.
Most of the people of Betilar Char, Char Patrail, Chak Gobindopur, Palora, Dhakar Bajor, Paschim Rathora and Gujurir Char villages have extended their helping hands. They have been contributing both money and labour towards construction of the bridge.
Seventy percent of the construction work has been completed at a cost of Tk 25 lakh.
While talking to the villagers they said Rafikul Islam Ghotu, Shariful Islam, Johirul Islam, Monirujjaman Jhontu and Abdul Halim of Char-Betila village and Saiful Islam of Betila village have personally taken the initiative of building the concrete bridge there.
The locals said the Bholai Mollar Ghat on the canal is the only point that offers road links to 13 villages, where around 50,000 people live.
”When funding was not coming from anywhere, we had planned to build the bridge across the canal with our own money,” said Rafiqul Islam Ghotu, a leading organiser. They took the initiative after holding a meeting at Bholai Mollar Ghat in February last year, he said.
Local people from all walks of life attended the meeting and gave their opinion in favour of building a concrete bridge with their own finance.
Manikganj Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman Ataur Rahman Ata gave Tk 6 lakh from the upazila parishad fund, he said adding that Tk 25 lakh has already been spent.
The people of the villages have been using bamboo-bridge to cross the canal.
”We have encouraged them to organize themselves and build the bridge with their own fund,” Chairman of Betila-Mitora Union Parishad Nasir Hossain said. The cooperation and efforts made by the local youths are praiseworthy, he said.
When the construction of the bridge will be complete the farmers of the twelve villages will be most benefited as they will be able to take their products to markets easily, the chairman added.
