BUET student crushed under train
A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was crushed under the wheels of a speedy train at Moghbazar in the capital yesterday morning.
The deceased was Tanveer Gawher Tapu, 23, son of Ali Gawhar, a resident of Moghbazar. He was a 3rd year student of Civil Engineering of Buet.
Witnesses said Tanveer was crushed under the train while he was crossing Moghbazar level crossing around 11am, leaving him severely injured.
Later, he was whisked off to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, said Assistant Sub-inspector Sentu Chandra Das, in-charge of DMCH police camp.
Zainul festival starts
A two-day Zainul festival organised by the Charukala Barisal began in the city on occasion of the 101st birth anniversary of the renowned artist Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin.
Architect cum artist Moinul Abedin, son of the Shilpacharya, inaugurated an exhibition of different items, including 60 paintings, at Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall on the first day.
Besides, Shamsul Alam Azad, principal of Narayanganj Charukala Institute, inaugurated Charukala Barisal Shilpalaya, an art gallery at Charukala Barisal.
Sculptor Aminul Hasan, Artist Dr Kazi Mozammel Hossain, cultural activists Advocate SM Iqbal, Shanti Das, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, addressed the programme, among others.
Womans body recovered
Police recovered the body of a woman from Arichpur-Gazibari area under Tongi thana in Gazipur city early yesterday.
The victim was Jhumur Akhter, 32, wife of Mukter Hossain, a resident of the area. Jhumur, daughter of Hossain Mullah of Rajnagar under Rampal thana in Khulna district, was living at a rental house in the area with her husband and son.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the fourth floor of a five storied building of the area and sent it to hospital morgue, police said. Police are investigating the matter.
Youth commits suicide
A young man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling of his room in Mirpara area of Sylhet city on Tuesday afternoon.
Being informed by locals, police came in and found the body of Rasel Ahmad,32, a resident of the area, hanging with the ceiling of a room at a house at about 5pm, said Nizam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Shahparan Police Station. The body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The young man committed suicide but the reason behind could not be known immediately, the OC added.
Landslide kills woman
A woman was killed and her husband severely injured in an incident of landslide at a stone quarry in Balughat area of Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet on Tuesday afternoon.
Officer-in-charge of Gowainghat police station Md Delowar Hossain said Chaina Begum, a resident of Shoti village of the upazila, along with her husband Kala Miah was collecting stones from a quarry when one side of the hole collapsed and both of them fell under the mud. Chaina Begum died on the spot. Locals sent injured Kala Miah to Sylhet Osmani Medical College.
