Major rivers in spate

50 Bogra villages inundated
Special Correspondent

As the monsoon set in with heavy rain at places, major rivers are rising. The Brahmaputra, fed by water from upstream, has inundated over 50 villages at Sariakandi in Bogra, breaching flood protection embankments. At least 10,000 people have been affected. The Brahmaputra, which has flooded its banks upstream in Assam, has inundated at least seven unions of Kurigram Sadar and Nageshwari, the charlands in Gaibandha Sadar, Saghata and Fulchhari and Sundarganj upazilas,
Abdul Miah, a WDB official, told reporters that the Brahmaputra was flowing 19.82cm above the danger level in Gaibandha, sweeping across the low-lying areas and the charlands. Other rivers in the district are flowing below their danger level, he said. Reports said the Brahmaputra and its tributaries may swell further, putting pressure on Bogra and Sirajganj, as flood waters from Assam flows downstream. The Surma and the Khowai too are in spate, with the rush of water down the hills from across the border following heavy rain for the past few days. In a bulletin yesterday afternoon, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said all major rivers in the country were in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours. Quoting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the FFWC said the country’s north central and north-eastern parts were experiencing heavy rainfall that may continue for the next 48 hours. The flood situation in some areas of Sunamganj may deteriorate at the same time. The Surma in Sunamganj and the Khowai, the woe of Habiganj at Ballah, were flowing 40cm and 13cm above their respective danger levels, the FFWC added. Our Sylhet Correspondent Biplob Dev reports: The waters of the Gowain and Piyan rivers have flooded five unions in Gowainghat. The rising Surma has forced closure of the Sylhet-Bholaganj highway. The flood situation has deteriorated in the northern districts, including Nilphamari and Kurigram, with an increase in water level of different rivers, including the Teesta.
UNB adds: In Nilphamari, the water level of the Teesta River has risen due to heavy rain and onrush from the upstream in India. The river is now flowing close to the danger level. Sources at the local Water Development Board (WDB) office said the water level of the river started rising from Thursday evening. The water level reached 52 metre 38cm on Friday afternoon, just 2 cm below the danger level. 44 sluice gates of the Tessta Barrage have been opened to keep the water flow under control.
Meanwhile, water started entering the low-lying areas in the basin of the Teesta river. WDB engineer at Dalia Suruzzaman said the water level of the river can cross the danger level anytime. In Kurigram, the flood situation has worsened due to rainfalls and onrush of water from the upstream.
The water level of the Dharala and the Teesta is close to the danger level in the district. Many low-lying areas have been inundated in seven upazilas of the district, rendering around 40,000 people marooned. WDB sources said the water level of the Brahmaputra rose by 29cm, the Dharala 30cm, the Teesta 1cm and the Dudhkumar by 31cm in the last 24 hours. A total of 150mm rain in Chilmari, 84.5mm in Dharala ferryghat and 127mm in Kaunia  point of the Teesta were recorded. In Sherpur, onrush of water in the Someshwari River from the hills triggered by heavy rainfall flooded many areas of the Jhenaigati upazila and damaged a 50-foot portion of the Jhenaigati-Bhatpur road.
In Sunamganj, rainfall and upstream water from the hill caused the water level of the Surma to flow 37cm above  of the danger level in Sholaghar point. The WDB has recorded 125mm rain in the last 24 hours. The flood has affected different areas of Sadar, Doarabazar and Chhatak upazilas. In Lalmonihat, the flood situation deteriorated as the Teesta was flowing above the danger level.
