Robber lynched  in Narsingdi

A suspected robber was beaten to death by a mob at Khas-Howla village in Polash upazila of Narsingdi early yesterday.
The lynched robber has been identified as Yusuf Ali, 25, of Balurchar village in the upazila.
Witnesses and police sources said a group of armed robbers, numbering ten to eleven, were trying to enter a house breaking the window for committing robbery. Three night guards of the village raised alarm and chased them.
At one stage, as announcement on presence of robbers was made through loudspeaker from a mosque, villagers came out of their homes and caught one of them. The villagers beat and critically injured the suspect.
Police on hearing the news rushed to the spot, rescued the injured robber and sent him to Narsingdi Zila Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead. Police sent his body to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
 Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Poash police station, said Yusuf was a notorious robber of the area. Police also recovered some machetes and a Chinese axe.
500 maunds jatka seized
MUNSHIGANJ: Bangladesh Coast Guard and Fisheries Department in a joint drive seized 500 maunds of jatka (hilsa fry) from a launch on the Meghna river in Gazaria upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.
A coast guard team and officials of fisheries department conducted the drives at 'MV Rasel-1' on the river and recovered the fish, said Coast Guard officer Mustafijur Rahman.
The owners of the hilsa fry, however, managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the team.
Later, the seized jatka were distributed among the local madrasa and orphanages.
Two get life term for rape

A court in Tangail has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a school girl.
Sarif Uddin Ahmed Judge of Tangail district Women and child Repression Control Tribunal pronounced the sentence on Monday evening.  The judge also fined them one lakh taka each, in default to suffer two years more in jail.
The convicted rapists are Lablu Mia and Julhash Uddin of village East Jotabari of Madhupur Upazila under Tangail district.
 The prosecution case in brief is that the two men went to the house of the victim, a student of class-V, at village Tengri of the same Upazila in the evening on May 15, 2012. Taking the advantage of absence of other inmates of the house, they gang raped the girl.  The girl later became pregnant. A case was lodged with Madhupur Police Station. Police after investigation submitted charge sheet against four persons.  The court ordered for DNA test. The test proved pregnancy by one of the accused rapists.
After examining the charge sheet, witnesses and relevant reports the court found the two guilty and pronounced the verdict. Two others -- Sifat and Najim -- were acquitted of the charge as they were proved not guilty.
Pro-AL candidate elected mayor
Bhola: Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Badal Krishna Debnath won the election in Charfassion municipality defeating his nearest rival BNP-supported candidate ANM Amirul Islam Mintij by a huge margin, reports UNB.
Badal Krishna Debnath’s ‘boat’ symbol bagged 14,957 votes while ANM Amirul Islam Mintij’s ‘sheaves of paddy ‘ got only 2,005 votes in the mayoral election held on Monday.
The returning officer declared Badal Krishna Debnath elected unofficially.
Man held with firearms
NARAIL: Police in a raid arrested a man with one LG and seven rounds of bullet of three not three rifle from Kumri village under Lohagara upazila yesterday morning, reports BSS.
The arrestee was identified as Sohel Khan,33, son of Saudier Rahman Khan of the village.
Acting on a tip off, a team of police of Lohagara thana in the early morning raid in Kumri village arrested the man with the arms and ammunition, OC of Lohagara thana Kamruzzaman said.
A case was filed with Lohagara thana in this connection.
