34 Jamaat, Shibir men held in Gazipur

Police in a drive arrested 34 Jamaat-Shibir men while they were holding a secret meeting at a restaurant at Shibari intersection in the city on Thursday night. Tipped off, a team of police raided Euro Bangla restaurant in the area and arrested them while they were holding a meeting around 9pm, said Officer-in-charge of Joydebpur police station Khandaker Rezaul Hasan Police arrested 34 Jamaat-Shibir men, including Gazipur city unit Jamaat secretary Khairul Hasan. Police said among the arrestees were leaders and activists of 19 district units of Jamaat-Shibir, including Jamalpur, Sirajganj and Tangail, and most of them were wanted in several cases filed for arson attack and vandalism. They also recovered 25 petrol bombs and huge amount of anti-government leaflets from their possession. On the other hand, acting ameer of Gazipur city unit Jamaat-e-Islami SM Sanaullah said Jamat activists held a meeting and tea programme with general people in the restaurant and police arrested them. He claimed that they had not any petrol bomb or anti-government leaflet, but police demanded that they recovered petrol bombs and leaflets from them.
