Ershad, Fakhrul to select party nominees

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad will give final approval for nomination of candidates from his party to contest the polls scheduled for March 22, and Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will certify the nominations of aspiring candidates for his party. Jatiya Party Presidium Member SM Faisal Chisti yesterday submitted a letter to the Election Commission (EC) in this regard, while BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi submitted a letter about the changes in the party’s constitution.
“BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has brought an amendment to the party’s constitution to keep the responsibility of certain election-related issues with the post of Senior Vice-Chairman of BNP,” Rizvi told journalists after submitting the letter.
The BNP on Feb 10 brought amended its Constitution keeping the provision of election-related issues tied to the post of Senior Vice-Chairman alongside the Chairperson. Replying to a query, Rizvi said, “The BNP Chairperson will finalise the nominations of the UP candidates, while the Acting Secretary General will certify it. Although the Joint-Secretary General of BNP certified the nominations in municipality polls, Mirza Fakhrul will be the designated person to certify here.” He stated they will submit the name of the designated persons having the power to nominate candidates in the UP polls by tomorrow. He added that six persons will select candidates at the grassroots level and BNP candidates of the ninth parliamentary elections will be part of the selection process. Meanwhile, Faisal Chisti said, “The JP Chairman will nominate the candidates, but our Secretary General will certify the nominations.” As per the UP election rules, the registered political parties will have to submit the names of designated persons who would certify candidates, to the  Commission, within seven days of the announcement of the poll schedule, by February 18. There are 40 registered political parties. As per the election schedule, the Commission will hold polls of 739 UPs on March 22
