While the Asia Cup T20 tournament comes closer, Bangladesh are fazed by the fitness of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman who is yet to recover his shoulder injury fully.
The young pace sensation was included in both Asia Cup and World T20 squad with a hope that he would regain his fitness in due time. But the recovery process is deemed to be slower than the anticipation which put a question mark on whether he could make his way into the Asia Cup with 100 percent fitness. The Asia Cup will begin on February 24 and runs till March 6.
It is learnt the young pacer as of now isn’t comfortable to deliver his two stock deliveries—cutter and slower — which take the world by surprise and fetch him wickets in abundance. During the last couple of days he tries those two deliveries but couldn’t bowl those with much authority.
An extra power should be generated from some particular muscles to bowl those two deliveries which are yet to be decoded by the batsmen. Mustafizur has been doing special gym to strengthen those muscles and is expected to overcome the problems.
He is however currently focusing on to hone the skill of delivering yorker in the death overs, a vital component in the T20 cricket. At the same time, he is also trying to earn the authority of swinging the balls in controlled manner.
Mustafizur injured his shoulder during the second T20 against Zimbabwe in the last month after which he has been doing the rehabilitation to recover it.
“He is not 100 percent fit. He has still some problem in delivering the slowers and cutters. But we are expecting him to be fit ahead of the Asia Cup. He has been going in right direction,” said Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the team manager.
Mustafizur was supposed to play the maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Lahore Qalanders but the injury prevented him from going there. He is also acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for RS. 1.40 crore during the IPL auction.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh national team returns Dhaka today after ending their practice camp in Khulna and Chittagong. Since Dhaka was the major venue for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World, the national team set their camp in those two cities. They had played a number of practice matches during the camp.
They will however practice in Dhaka until the Asia Cup starts. Though the tournament proper of the Asia Cup will begin on January 24, four teams — Afghanistan, Hong Kong, UAE and Oman — will play a qualifying round from January 19 to make them eligible for the main event. One of the four would qualify for the tournament proper.
Immediate after the Asia Cup, Bangladesh would have to fly for Dharmashala to play the World T20. They are scheduled to play only practice match against Hong Kong on Mach 5 but if they move into the final of the Asia Cup which is on March 6, the practice match will be rescheduled.
Bangladesh will get Netherlands, Ireland and Oman in their group. If they overcome the group hurdle they will get the entry in the tournament proper of World Cup T20 in which they will be drawn in Group 2 along with Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan.
