Bangladesh captain Jahanara Alam yesterday said that they want to play good cricket alongside uplift their rankings in International Cricket Council (ICC) in Women’s World Twenty20 2016.
Bangladesh are now ninth in rankings just above Ireland, the best rankings after the inception of women’s team ranking in ICC in 2015.
“When we played World T20 in 2014 for the first time we had played there as a host. But this time we’re going to play World T20 by dint of our capability. We’re very much confident of doing well in extravaganza event,” said Jahanara Alam, who hauled 16 wickets so far from 25 matches in T20 with the best figures of 3-15.
“We’ve set our target to be seventh or eighth in ICC rankings. We’re solid working and will try hard and soul to make it,” Alam told media at Bangladesh women’s team sponsorship declaration and jersey handover ceremony at media block of Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Cute, popular brand product of Mousumi Industries Limited, roped in the national women’s team sponsor for the upcoming world Twenty20 to be held in India in between March-April. Fresh, earlier, got the right of the Bangladesh men’s team for the showcase event.
The captain said that they have no alternative before them to play more matches under Future Tour’s Programme (FTP) for improving their ICC rankings.
“Due to placed lower (9th) in ICC rankings we could not get more allocation of matches from ICC. Our board tried hard to arrange more matches before World T20 but they couldn’t manage schedule to organise any bilateral or tri-nation series for them,” the 22-year-old said.
“We’ve to play more matches under ICC. For this we’ve to try first to improve our rankings in ICC. We want to play against men’s team in the next time. That will help much for us. Hopefully we could improve our performance and rankings in World T20,” the right-handed pacer reckoned.
“Everybody in the country expects good result from both men’s and women’s team in World T20. We also expect to play a good brand of cricket and fetch achievement from the extravaganza event. We believe we could do well in World Cup.”
Ahead of the World T20 campaign, Bangladesh will play two warm-up practice matches against Sri Lanka and Ireland at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on March 10 and 12 respectively.
“By playing matches, a team made their improvement day by day. We don’t call it a lacking for us. The practice we did before the World Cup that’s enough for us. We’ve already played some practice matches. Along with that, we’ll play two warm-up matches ahead of the World T20,” the pacer-turned-captain said.
“Previously I played for Bangladesh as a player. But this time I will represent Bangladesh as captain. I don’t feel any extra pressure. The bulk of the senior players of my team are very helpful to me,” she told in response to a query.
At the fag end of the programme, Kazi Newaz Ibne Mahtab, CMO, Mousumi Industries Limited handed over the Cute-branded jerseys to captain Jahanara Alam and vice captain Ayesha Rahman Suktara.
BCB women’s wing chairman MA Awal Chowdhury, media committee chairman Jalal Younus, CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury and Ziauddin Adil, managing director of Top of Mind were also present.
