DoE takes up Tk 7.58cr project to curb sound pollution

STAFF REPORTER

In order to curb the ever-increasing levels of sound pollution in the country, especially in its cities, the Department of Environment (DoE) has recently taken up a new project, ‘Coordinated partnership programme to stop sound pollution’.
The DoE yesterday arranged a workshop at the Local Government Engineering Division (LGED) auditorium to hammer out the details and obtain advice from different stakeholders, in order to formulate various activities of the project.
Under the project, worth Tk 7.58 crore, a survey on noise pollution will be conducted in seven divisional cities to determine the present situation of noise pollution.
The DoE, which is responsible for keeping noise pollution in check in the country, had stopped measuring sound levels in the capital as well as other cities over the past four years because of a funds crunch.
Now, under the new project, noise pollution would be measured at 645 specified locations. The DoE will also conduct a survey among a total of 19,350 different persons to collect necessary data to measure the causes and effects of noise pollution.
As part of the project, training will be imparted to 480 to 520 officials of the DoE and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and 480 to 520 employees of both the organisations. Training related to noise pollution will also be imparted to 3,795 to 3,910 drivers across the country.
The DoE will also purchase 200 noise-level meters under the project. The project will be completed by 2017.
At the workshop, Prof (Dr) Pran Gopal Datta, a former vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and a renowned ear,
neck and throat (ENT) specialist, discussed different causes and effects of noise pollution.
Dr Kamal Ahmed Majumder, secretary of the forests and environment ministry, and Raisul Alam Mandal, director general of the DoE, also attended the workshop.
