A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a man to death penalty and fined Tk50, 000 for killing his two younger brothers over land dispute at Kazibari of Sultan Pur village of Raozan Upazila in Chittagong in 2013.
Second Additional District Session of Chittagong Judge Md Rabi-Uzzaman handed down the verdict.
The condemned convict was Abul Kalam Azad, 40. He is now behind the bars. Due to dispute over land of family graveyard Azad hacked to death his two younger brothers Abu Sufian and Abu Murshed by sharp machete on July 22, 2013 at their yard, said the court sources. “The court awarded with capital punishment to the convict under section 302 Penal Code as the allegation brought against him was proved undoubtedly,” said Advocate Samir Das Gupta, additional public prosecutor of Chittagong district.
However, the defense lawyer advocate Ranango Bikash Chowdhury expressed his dissatisfaction over the verdict. He said to the reporters that he would go to the High Court against the verdict.
Over the murder incident, Abus Sufian’s wife filed a case with Raozan Police Station. After investigation police submitted chargesheet on it on October 30, 2013 before the court. On February 25, 2014 the court framed the charge against the accused. After examining the records and 14 witnesses out of 17, the court handed down the verdict. Mentionable mother of Azad also gave witnessed against him.
