Free cities, towns from garbage

Free cities, towns from garbage

It is quite disturbing to note that dust, filth and garbage dominate the roads of Barisal city. According to a report carried in this newspaper on Monday, over 200 open dustbins in the city are spreading foul odours forcing pedestrians to put their handkerchiefs on their noses. It is difficult to believe that even four years ago, according to visitors, Barisal was one of the cleanest cities in the country, and it has turned into a dirty one within this time. The report stated that the incumbent mayor of Barisal City Corporation (BCC) had made an election pledge that Barisal would become the cleanest city in the country. It is unfortunate that two years have elapsed since he took over office but the inhabitants of the city hardly saw any sign of his commitment kept.
Not just in Barisal, the same scenario is prevailing in almost all cities and towns in the country. Due to indiscriminate dumping of household garbage, leftovers of vegetables and fruits, plastic bags, papers, tissue papers and medical garbage, the dustbins that are located near roads are overflowing. In the absence of recycling, the stinking garbage heaps are becoming higher and higher. In fact, the open dustbins are polluting the environment and public health has been threatened seriously. Moreover, medical garbage has the potential to spread infectious diseases.
That majority of the inhabitants of towns and cities hardly care about keeping the cities and towns clean is evident from the present dismal state of affairs. It is not only happening in areas inhabited by poor communities, it is also happening in posh areas where affluent people live. In many developed countries of the world it is mandatory to keep roads, pavements, parks and other places neat and clean. Violators of the laws relating to cleanliness have to suffer punishment in those countries. Unfortunately, in our country, taking advantage of the lax vigilance of the law enforcement agencies, this malpractice is being done rampantly.
It is the responsibility of the city corporation authorities to ensure cleaning of the dustbins on a regular basis. The people engaged in cleaning the garbage should be made accountable. Round-the-clock supervision is also needed so that garbage is not thrown here and there. Generation of mass awareness in this regard can also bring the desired results. Our future generations should not be exposed to environmental pollution.
