Shortage of physicians and equipment has been hampering treatment in 100-bed Jhenidah Sadar Hospital over the past few years.
Out of sanctioned 41 posts of physician, including junior and senior consultants, 22 are serving here, while the position of remaining 19 is vacant. Besides, the posts of 10 administrative staff are lying vacant.
According to hospital sources, the lack of manpower has hit the departments of eye, surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, medicine, pathology and emergency department.
Posts of two assistant nurses, administrative officer, pharmacist, office assistant/data entry operator, ward master and ticket clerks are also lying vacant.
Superintendent of Jhenidah Sadar hospital Dr. Ayub Ali said Prime Minister Seikh Hasina during a visit three years ago hinted at raising the hospital bed capacity to 250.
But the upgrading has not been done and it is running with 100 beds and the facilities there are still inadequate.
The superintendent said around 50 child patients are treated in the hospital in the ward having capacity of only eight. Now, on an average 200 patients are treated in the wards. A further 800 to 1,000 patients are getting treatment in the outpatient ward everyday.
