The month-long Amar Eksuhey Boi Mela saw the arrival of a total of 1705 new books till yesterday.
The fair is being held at Bangla Academy and Suhrawrady Udyan in the capital since February 1. Publishers are unveiling an increasing number of book covers as most of them have already seen boom sales on the occasion of Pahela Falgun and Valentine’s Day, they said.
“Number of books at the fair would increase as most publishers would bring more books especially on February 21, International Mother Language Day” said Mazharul Islam, the publisher of Annay Prokas.
Abosar Prakashan has published five new poetry collections of five famed poets - Nirmalendu Goon, Al Mahmud, Ahsan Habib, Syed Shamsul Haque and Shamsur Rahm, said its stall attendant Towhidur Rahman.
“We saw boom sales of poetry especially on Valentine’s Day” he said. Poets continued to publish new titles enriching Bangla literature and that is why the new arrivals at Amar Ekushey Boi Mela are also seen led by a huge number of poetry books.
Poetry enthusiasts roamed the fair venue, browsing poetry books in stalls to look for titles of both renowned and new poets.
“I have bought two poetry books- Godhulir Shopnochayea by Col Khairul Hasan, and Alor Michhil by Manik Lal Shadhu from Jagrity Prokashoni today” said Manjurul Ikarm, a 4th year student of DU’s Political Science.
“I read poetry as I have found struggles involving people, love, romance and patriotism in creative works of the poets” he added Talking to The Independent, celebrity poet Asad Chowdhury said an increasing number of young writers in the country are showing a keen interest in writing poems compared to other literature sections and that’s why such type of books are increasing day by day.
“The style of writing of the young writers is excellent. I am quite optimistic about the writing of young poets,” Asad added.
A total of 84 books hit the stalls yesterday, with 29 collections of poetry leading the tally, followed by 15 story books, 7 novels, 4 essays and others.
Books of poetry led the tally of new arrivals in the first half. According to the 14 days statistics of fair information centre, A total of 408 poetry books were followed by 274 novels, 269 books of short stories, 95 books of essays and 20 books on history, 19 research books, 7 translations and others.
Meanwhile, Bangla Academy held a discussion on “Study on Jibananda in Bangladesh” at the main stage on the Bangla Academy in the afternoon.
