A successful end to the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup relieved Bangladesh after the tournament began with a slight hiccup. The Australia cancelled its participation over security reason what created a lot of pressure on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to justify there is no security concerns.
In the last three weeks while the tournament was going on, no unwanted things were happened what could prove the Australia’s apprehension. Moreover unlike the majority of the Under-19 World Cup, the tournament was huge success as far as the media coverage and other issues are concerned.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) also heaped praise on Bangladesh government, people and the BCB to make it an overwhelmingly successful tournament. The world cricket apex body also termed the country as safe and secured for cricket.
Just one day after the end of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016, the officials of ICC said this at a press briefing at a local city hotel yesterday. ICC president Zaheer Abbas, its CEO David Richardson and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon spoke on the occasion.
BCB directors Jalal Younus, IH Mallick, Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, Akram Khan and CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury amongst others were also present.
“I would like to express our appreciation for the BCB for hosting a very successful event. Whilst the event might not have been of the status of the senior World Cup or the World T20 event, the logistical and operational requirements are the same, and in fact, sometimes even more difficult and challenging, bearing in mind the event involved 16 teams, 48 matches and is one of the biggest tournaments that we stage,” said David Richardson.
“One of the most important facets of hosting any event, unfortunately, is the safety and security. In this respect, I’d like to express our appreciation to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the government and all the security agencies who worked together with the ICC and BCB security staff in making sure we could present the tournament in a safe and secure manner,” Richardson told media at post-World Cup press meet.
ICC president Zaheer Abbas expressed his satisfaction to see the rise of the cricket amongst the associate nations of the ICC.
Citing the names of Namibia, Nepal and Afghanistan, Abbas said, “I’m impressed with the performance at this level of cricket. They made a rise at Under-19 Cricket tremendously.”
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon thanked Prime Minister, PM’s security advisor and security agencies for their all-out support to make the 16-nation competition successful.
“We got the support from Prime Minister. We directly involved PM’s security Advisor Tarique Ahmed Siddique with the event. Government security agencies helped us to make the even successful. Actually Bangladesh once again have proved we are able to arrange the international event very successfully,” he remarked.
Australia is the only country, who skipped the tournament owing to the security ground that drew the criticism from all the corners of the World. When asked about it, David Richardson said, “We’re very pleased with the fact that we made the decision to carry on with the tournament, despite Australia’s decision to withdraw their team. I think the outcomes and the results that that was the correct decision.”
“We’re certainly looking forward to the World T20 in India coming up. There is no doubt that there will be security challenges there as well. And we learnt a lot from this tournament. We’ve set a standard at what we need to deliver, with respect to all events, not just cricket events that we’ve to deal with. We’ll take it seriously, if we need to, and make sure that any threat that is received or any threat that is identified, we’ll put in place anything needed to negate it.”
“A member country is not entitled to just withdraw from a tournament, it has to be justified. Now, as to whether CA was justified, those questions have already been answered. At this stage, to carry on with the tournament was the correct decision, and we’re pleased with it,” Richardson replied in a query.
