Three notable films--‘Komol Gandhar’, ‘Amar Lenin’ and ‘Subornorekha’--will be screened today at the ongoing six-day programme titled ‘Ritwik Ghatak Retrospective’ at the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbag in the city. Bangladesh National Museum, in association with Chalacchitram Film Society, has organised the event on celebrated filmmaker Ritwik Kumar Ghatak that kicked off on January 12. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the event as chief guest, while Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Ritwik Ghatak’s daughter Samhita Ghatak were the special guests.
‘Komal Gandhar’ also known as ‘A Soft Note on a Sharp Scale’ is a 1961 Bengali film written and directed Ritwik Ghatak. The film explores three themes juxtaposed in the narrative, the dilemma of Anusuya, the lead character, divided leadership of IPTA and the fallout of the partition of India.
On the other hand, ‘Amar Lelin’ is a 1970 black and white documentary film directed by Ritwik Ghatak based on his thoughts and views of Ritwik on Lenin and communism, made for the Government of West Bengal in the centenary year (1970) of the birth of Vladimir Lenin.
And, Ritwik Ghatak’s ‘Subornorekha’ tells the story of Ishwar Chakraborty (Abhi Bhattacharya), a Hindu refugee from East Pakistan after the 1947 partition of India. He goes to West Bengal with his little sister Sita (Indrani Chakrabarty), where he tries to start a new life. In a refugee camp, they see the abduction of a low-caste woman and Ishwar takes her little son Abhiram (Sriman Tarun) with him. He gets a job at a factory in the province, near the river Subarnarekha.
The films will be screened today at 4:00pm and 6:30pm.
