A group of 13 men allegedly tied up and thrashed two teenage boys in Rajshahi district, accusing them of stealing a mobile phone, and allegedly recorded the entire incident on video. Among the accused are an Army sergeant and a police constable. One person has been arrested in this connection. The victims as well as the accused are from Chowbaria village of the district’s Paba upazila. Of the two teenage boys, one is Zahid Hasan, 15, a student of Class VIII at Bagsara High School, who has been admitted to the upazila health centre. The other boy, Emon Ali, 13, has gone missing after the incident. Imran Ali, father of Zahid Hasan, alleged that their neighbour Rakib’s mobile phone had gone missing on Friday morning, and he and his family and friends held Emon responsible for it. According to Imran, some men—including Rakib, 26, Nasir, 47, Sagar, 25, and Palash, 35—had whisked away his son from near the airport on Friday afternoon. “They tied up my son and thrashed him till 10pm. They even recorded the entire incident on video. Then, they handed my son over to me,” he added.Imran lodged an assault case against 13 persons at Paba Police Station on Saturday night. The accused include a soldier and a policeman, said Paba police station officer-in-charge (OC) Shariful Islam. Nasir Uddin is a sergeant in the Army and is currently posted at the Jahangirabad Cantonment in Bogra. The policeman, identified as Sagar, is a constable. Both were apparently at home on vacation, police said. Apart from Rakib, Nasir, Sagar and Palash, the accused are Rakib’s father Fazlu Mia, 45, Samadi, 42, Anik, 21, Uzzal, 18, Masim, 30, Tuhin, 26, Kamal, 21, Razzak, 45, and Azizul Islam, 48.
