West Indies took one kind of revenge, beating India by five wickets in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup tournament final. It was the first final between the two teams in any tournament’s final in any kind of format after 33 years.
While in 1983 World Cup final in senior men’s tournament, West Indies came up as hot favourite, only to be denied by underdog India surprisingly. India defended 183 runs to beat the Caribbean side, boasted with several greats, by 40 runs what actually brought up a renaissance in Indian cricket.
Afterwards the India cricket has been making its upward spiral while West Indies have been going in downhill spiral. While it wasn’t sure whether the victory would help them make a giant stride in a dysfunctional Caribbean cricket system, it showed a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ at least.
They had also won the World Twenty20 trophy in 2012 but that didn’t bring up any significant change to the cricket in the Caribbean Islands, apart from attracting their youths to the shortest format of the cricket.
But in the tournament, their youths showed they have some aggressive fast bowlers in their kitty while they have some stubborn batsmen which gave an indication of good future in Test cricket.
However the most important aspect is when West Indies wins any tournament, it also wins the heart and gives the entertainment. Even the ‘mankad incident’ couldn’t take the gloss off from what they achieved. The chestrolling what Shamar Springer showed, was a sight to behold. It attracted the cricketing world as well.
Darren Sammy, overwhelmed by the victory of his countrymen, tweeted, “I had to try the #SpringerDance after that superb victory over India by our #under19 team.…”
