Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hassan Miraj became the ‘man of the tournament’ in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, proving his tag of the country’s future prospect.
Miraj scored 242 runs and bagged 12 wickets in six matches to be awarded the best player of the tournament. While he had scripted the side’s victory in batting, his bowling also gave the opponents a nightmare. Even in the losing-cause against West Indies he showed his brilliance in both batting and bowling department, only to be denied by a spirited West Indies who eventually emerged as the champions.
After having an overwhelming success in the tournament in individual sector, Miraj didn’t want to stop here. As usually he eyed to make the cut in the national team, an ultimate goal of every player but he knew it wouldn’t be so easy for him with Bangladesh having a settled team at the moment.
“I know it wouldn’t be easy to make a room in the national team. But I will keep trying and for that I have to keep up the performance what I showed here,” said Miraj.
“On personal ground it’s a good tournament for me but it would have been the best should we win the trophy. Nothing is compared to winning the trophy in fact,” he said adding they were so close but couldn’t grab it eventually.
“We won all the matches but couldn’t win the crucial one. We made some mistakes for which we paid the price. But that was not our day and we weren’t the team that day what we were used to be,” said Miraj who played his last match at this level when Bangladesh took on Sri Lanka in third place play-off match.
Bangladesh finished third after beating Sri Lanka. It was the most successful result in this tournament for Bangladesh after Mushfiqur Rahim’s side came up as fifth in 2006 tournament.
Miraj however heaped praise on the champions West Indies, saying, “No one believes they could be the champion in the tournament. But they have belief on them and they back themselves to win it. They beat the teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh and India, against who they came as an underdog but they didn’t care it. They played beautiful cricket to emerge as the champion.”
