The 16th Sundarbans Day was observed yesterday in Khulna as elsewhere in the south-western coastal districts with various programmes. The day is being observed every year since 2001 to create awakening among the people about protection and preservation of biodiversity of the world heritage Sundarbans.
Sundarbans Day was declared on February 14, 2001 at a national level conference held in Khulna with former President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed as chief guest.
The Sundarban Academy, Khulna in collaboration with the forest department and non-government organisation, Rupantar, Concern Worldwide, Relief International jointly took up elaborate programmes observing the day in a befitting manner to protect the world’s largest mangrove forest and save wildlife including tigers for conservation of its biodiversity.
Programmes of the day were colourful procession, discussion meeting, documentary on Sundarban, debate competition, school-based rallies, easy competition on Sundarban and cultural function. Sundarban Academy organised the discussion meeting held at Khulna Shilpakala Academy auditorium under Sadar police station in the city.
