Two rival groups of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL’s) Chittagong University (CU) unit have clashed over establishing supremacy on the campus no less than 13 times in the past seven months, leaving 55 students injured.
The groups—‘Sixty-Nine’ and ‘Bijoy’—are named after two compartments of shuttle trains by which the students commute to CU. Alamgir Tipu, president of the suspended CU BCL committee, leads ‘Sixty-Nine’, while its secretary, Fazly Rabby Sujan, is the head of ‘Bijoy’. Following the clashes, 55 general students and activists of BCL in CU have been injured. Of them, two were in a critical condition.
Because of these clashes, the BCL central committee suspended all types of activities of its CU unit committee on February 10. Earlier, on February 8, four activists were injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy on the campus. The CU authorities have formed a four-member committee, led by Prof. Jashim Uddin of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, to investigate the reasons behind these frequent clashes. It has been given seven working days to complete its probe.
On the other hand, two cases have been filed in connection with the February 8 clash. Another clash occurred on February 9, which was followed by vandalism of four rooms of the Suhrawardy Hall. During a clash on November 2 last year, 30 people—including four police officers—were injured during the first intake test for the 2015–2016 academic session.
Following the clash, police arrested 40 BCL activists and recovered a large number of sharp weapons from BCL-dominated dormitories—Shahjalal and Shah Amanat. Three cases were filed against 235 BCL leaders and activists.
According to sources, on July 21 last year, the BCL elected Alamgir Tipu as its president and Fazly Rabby Sujan as the general secretary. Former BCL president Badiuzzaman Sohag and former general secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam jointly signed a statement, declaring only the names of the president and general secretary. Sujan and Tipu are reportedly supporters of the two most influential Awami League leaders of the port city: respectively the party's city unit president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and general secretary and mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.
An Economics student, Tipu has been accused of being involved in twin murder cases in the Chittagong CRB area, following a clash between ruling party affiliate Juba League and the BCL over a railway tender bid, on June 24, 2013. Sujan is a student of Finance and Banking.
A local boy, Arman Hossain, 8, and Juba League activist Saju Palit, were killed in the incident. Tipu was arrested from the scene, but was later released on bail, said a police source.
