Rohingya census begins in 6 districts

The first-ever census of unregistered Rohingya population in Bangladesh began in six districts yesterday to determine their exact number and stop their further influx into Bangladesh, reports UNB. Resolving the long-pending issue in a systematic and transparent way is also the aim of the census. In Cox’s Bazar, enumerators started the counting from the Rohingya camp at Pahartali of the district town and Kutupalang of Ukhia in the morning. They managed to include over 800 Rohingyas on the first day, said Abu Siddique, a Rohingya leader. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has engaged 100 supervisors and 1090 enumerators to conduct the census in Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Chittagong, Khagrachhari and Patuakhali districts. The counting activities are being conducted in the six districts simultaneously under the BBS’s Chittagong divisional office. Deputy Director of Cox’s Bazar BBS M Wahidur Rahman said they have divided the district into 49 zones for the census and will enlist all Rohingya families of eight upazilas in the district till February 17.
