It was an emotional day for Bangladesh cricket when the ICC awarded them Test status on June 26, 2000. The BCCI, which backed Bangladesh's Test cause, was quick to send the national team to play the inaugural Test here in November 2000, according to The Times of India. Bangladesh, led by Naimur Rahman Durjoy, went down to Sourav Ganguly's India by nine wickets, but were far from disgraced.
Bangladesh players, in fact, displayed good technique and temperament to bat more than 150 overs in posting 400 runs in their first innings. Their bowlers then reduced India to 236/6 before Ganguly and Sunil Joshi got into the rescue act.
A 29-run first-innings lead ought to have counted for little on Bangabandhu Stadium's flat track, but with virtually no experience of five-day cricket behind them, Bangladesh capitulated for a mere 91 in 46.3 overs in their second essay . In spite of the crushing defeat, the Bangla Tigers were hailed as heroes, and rightly so. It was envisaged that with proper infrastructure and more exposure and experience, Bangladesh would emerge as a worthy Test opponent.
Fifteen years into the new millennium, cricket has emerged as a big industry in Bangladesh, but the 'Tigers' continue to flounder in the game's longest format even though they have taken big strides in limited-overs cricket.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has done well to spread the game to the districts and the returns have been good with many players emerging from small towns and obscure hamlets, hoping to represent the national team.
