Flower growers passing busy time

Our correspondent, Jhenidah

Flower growers in Jhenidah this year expect to do a brisk business ahead of special occasions like Pahela Falgun, International Mother Language Day and Valentine Day.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) here, flower cultivation has been expanded in Kalgianj, Kotchandpur and Moheshpur upazilas in the district.
In Kaliganj upazila last year, 1,200 hectares of land was brought under marigold flower cultivation. Flower cultivation has begun in this area in 1988 and it has been a profitable business. A total of 2,550 hectares of land in the district has been brought under cultivation of flower, mainly marigold, this year.
“We are so much busy ahead of Pahela Falgun, Valentine Day and International Mother Language Day. At least 10,500 people are directly and indirectly involved in only flower related business,” said Nazma Aktar of Bara-Ghigati village in Kaliganj upazila.
Deputy director of DAE Dr Shah Mohammad Akramul Haque said this year, target of flower sale turnover has been set at more than Tk 5 crores ahead of the occasions.
“Flower is a perishable product and we have not enough facility to preserve it for a long time. A farmer can earn at least Tk35,000 to 40,000 from one bigha of land cultivating marigold flower,” he said.
Flower farmer Kutub Uddin, Sabdar Hossain and Swapon Biswas said a bunch of 8-10 big garlands of marigold is now being sold at Tk 120/150, which was sold at Tk 50/80 a couple of months ago. The production cost of flower on each bigha is around Tk 20,000 to Tk22,000. “But, we hope, this will help us earn at least Tk50,000 to Tk60,000 from sale of flowers,” he said.
General secretary of Jhenidah district flower association Jamir Uddin said over 20 to 25 flower laden trucks leave for Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Feni, Comilla and Khulna and other districts a day.
He said flower farmers will harvest a bumper production and expect to earn lot of profit in this environment of stable political situation.
