�Media role vital in reaching legal aid to poor�

RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a meeting here on Tuesday mentioned that media has a vital role in reaching the existing cost-free legal aid services to the poor and marginalised litigants especially ethnic population, reports BSS. At present, the media is playing active role towards removing social disparities and other social crimes like gender discrimination and violence against women. So, they expect that media would take the responsibility of attaining objectives in this regard. The issue was discussed elaborately in a view-sharing meeting with media personnel styled Expectation from Media Personnel towards ensuring access to legal aid to Marginalised communities at a restaurant in the city.
Brotee Somaj Kolyan Sangstha (BSKS) under its project Protecting the Vulnerable through Community Legal Services organised the media consultation meeting in association with Community Legal Services and UKaid. During his welcome speech, Shashanka Boron Roy, Coordinator of the project, said main thrust of the project is to improve access to justice and existing legal service procedure for un-served population like poor and extreme poor Adibashi concentrated areas in Rajshahi.
Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat, President of Rajshahi Press club Anwarul Alam, President of Metropolitan Press Club Mominul Islam and Training and Communication Coordinator of BSKS Razendra Kumar Das spoke on the occasion.
During his concept paper presentation, Ashique Iqbal, Regional Coordinator and Legal Advocacy Officer of BSKS, gave an overview of his organisations legal aid services.
Akbarul Hassan Millat said concerted management of common resources can contribute significantly to the livelihood of extreme poor people including ethnic minorities in the region including the Barind Tract.
