KHULNA: The lone CT (Computed tomography) scanner at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) lies inoperative for long one month, with no visible steps from the authorities for its repair, hindering prompt diagnosis of critical health problems, reports UNB. The CT scanner machine has been lying inoperative since January 7. Sources at the hospital said for the CT scanner remaining out of order for such a long time, the authorities are losing a considerable amount of income every day while patients are also not getting the chance to have their emergency tests done only for Tk2,000 each in a public hospital. On the other hand, patients have to count staggering Tk4,000 to have the same test done in a privately run diagnostic centre of the city.
A letter was sent to the chief medical manager of National Electro-Medical Equipment Maintenance Workshop and Training Centre on January 16 seeking quick repair of the CT scanner, the sources added. After a recent visit of officials of the company concerned, a draft proposal was prepared for the repair of the CT scanner. As per the draft proposal, Tk50 lakh is required for the repair work of the machine.
Meanwhile, several machines of the hospital, including two x-ray machines and two ultrasound machines, also went inoperative while 38 machines, including nine patient monitors in the Intensive Care Unit, six auto beds, two ventilators, four OT anesthesia machines, four portable lights, three ECG machines, four hydraulic tables, three nebulisers, 11 auto caves, three generators and an eco- cardiogram machine, have remained out of order for long.
SM Altaf Hossain, technologist (Radiography department) of the hospital, said the hospital’s healthcare services will increase if the damaged machines are repaired and the useless ones are made useable.
Besides, there is no Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine in the hospital.
People have to depend on the Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital for MRI examinations.
For this, they have to queue up at the hospital taking a serial number, he added. He also stressed the need for installation of MRI machine at KMCH.
Dr Ananda Mohon Saha, superintendent of the hospital, said a list of the useless machines have been submitted to the company concerned for immediate repair.
Necessary steps will be taken in this regard, he hoped.
Sheikh Mosharraf Hossain, secretary general of Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee (GKDACC) and a member of the hospital’s managing committee, said a letter has been sent to the authorities concerned in this regard 17 days ago. He also demanded intervention of the local public representatives for removing the problems in the hospital.
