Over 5,000 coconut trees planted on both sides of Tentultola-Naldanga road needs maintenance and nursing. According to Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Jhenidah, Tentultola-Naldanga road connects sadar and Kaliganj upazilas. The department planted 5,000 coconut trees on both sides of the five-kilometer road in 2003 as part of tree plantation programme. Coconut trees need nurturing and cleaning throughout the year; but it is not being carried out for a long time. LGED appointed five women for taking care of the planted trees. These appointed workers have stopped carrying out their duties as the tenure of their job expired a few years ago. Local sources said domestic animals like goat, cow and buffalo graze in open space along the road and damage the trees. Sometimes, these animals eat away the plants. Besides, some dishonest people steal coconuts and leaves. Rabiul Islam Rabi, chairman of Naldanga union parishad, said under its plantation programme, the LGED planted 5,000 coconut trees to prevent subsidence of road and enhance the beauty of the surroundings. LGED had appointed five women for taking care and maintenance of the road as well as tending the roadside trees. These appointed workers have stopped carrying out their duties as the tenure of their job expired a few years back. Chief engineer of LGED Rokib Ul Alam said the long rural road with lovely coconut trees has created a scenic beauty in the area. People have urged the LGED to appoint some new workers for taking care of the coconut trees.
He said: “Local people have also some responsibilities to protect the trees. We must ensure that the trees are well protected.”
