The ruling Awami League (AL) will nominate its party candidates on February 19 for contesting the upcoming union parishad (UP) election scheduled for March 22. The party has decided to hold a meeting of its nomination board for the UP polls at Ganabhaban, the official residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at 7pm on the day. Hasina is also the president of Awami League. Meanwhile, the ruling AL has already asked its grassroots leaders to submit the list of aspirant candidates for the post of chairman in the coming UP polls by February 15. The Election Commission (EC) is going to hold the polls to 4,275 union parishads in six phases under party symbols for the first time. The first phase of the election for the posts of chairman, ward member (general), and ward member (reserved) at 752 UPs will be held on March 22. As per the first phase schedule, the last date for the submission of nomination papers is February 22. The scrutiny of the nominations will be carried out on February 23-24 and the last date for withdrawing nominations is March 2. The symbols will be distributed among the candidates on March 3.
