BNP should forgo Jamaat dependence

Says B Chowdhury

Former Bangladesh President and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh chief Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury has urged the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to give up dependence on the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and return to the ideology of its founder General Ziaur Rahman.
“The politics of BNP is now completely dependent on Jamaat. If the party wants to survive in the future, it should give up its dependence on Jamaat as early as possible,” he said while addressing a gathering at a book launch ceremony in the city yesterday.
Badruddoza Chowdhury, also the founding Secretary General of BNP, said there were three stages to the politics being practiced by the BNP. “One is Ziaur Rahman’s BNP. Second is Khaleda Zia’s BNP and the third is Khaleda’s Jamaat-dependent BNP,” he added.
Chowdhury observed that BNP’s third stage of politics will not sustain in the future due to mounting pressure on the party to sever its ties with the Jamaat, both within the country and abroad. “BNP must get back to the politics of Ziaur Rahman,” he said.
Referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country, B Chowdhury said, “Modi resolved the 68 year-old land boundary agreement for which he deserves to be thanked but he did not resolve the Tessta issue for which crores of people have been shedding their tears for a long time,” he said, further referring to the Indian PM as a “good salesman”.
He also criticised the Indian premier for delivering his address in Hindi during his visit to Bangladesh. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should speak in Bangla when she visits India,” he suggested.
