West Indies are also eying to enter the final of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup breaking the well-furnished spin barrage of the host Bangladesh. They make their adaptation good in Bangladesh condition, where they had played their first final in 2004.
Their high hopes were shattered by Pakistan in that final match. But this time they advanced to the semifinal, very near to the final, beating the same opponent Pakistan though their World Cup journey was not so brilliant. Beating Zimbabwe, they confirmed their quarter-final that was rocked by controversial ‘Mankad’.
West Indies U-19 captain Shimron Hetmyer is hopeful about winning the semifinal match against Bangladesh.
“Yeah I do. If the guys can go out and do the basics correctly and just do their stuff, then I think we have a very good chance,” said Shimron Hetmyer yesterday.
The Caribbean skipper tipped the match against Bangladesh will be huge challenge as they have to play not only the team but also huge home crowd.
For us it's just motivation. As coach says, not a lot of us have played in front of very big crowd before. But the guys are up for the challenge. I think most of them are, if not in some of their franchisees back home are close to being in (Not sure what he means here),” Hetmyer told on the match-eve pre conference.
“We're not too comfortable, as the coach said, when the crowd is not cheering us but the good thing is it will be a good challenge for us,” the 19-year-old skipper added.
On the other hand, West Indies head coach Graeme West said that they are brimmed with confidence after winning the match against Pakistan.
“Clearly we're coming off the back of a very positive result against Pakistan, which gives us a lot of confidence. Having played Bangladesh 3-games when we first arrived here at the start of January, we’re pretty aware of what we're up against and very much looking forward to finding out how far we've come over the last couple of weeks,” Graeme West said.
“We got more familiar with the conditions and just the fact that we've been together as a group for a good period of time now. We feel more comfortable with our combinations; the coaching staff knows the players better,” he also said.
“The players understand a lot more of what's required. Clearly the challenges of playing in Bangladesh are different to those in the Caribbean. We always knew that the start of our preparation was really those three games and even the two warm-up games,” he added.
