Supporters of newly announced Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) committee and their opponents clashed again yesterday, leaving at least seven persons injured.
Those who were not included in the committee warned that they would continue their protest until the new committee is annulled.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders expressed concern, saying that continuation of such clashes might disrupt the preparation for the sixth council of the party, which is scheduled to be held on March 19.
The clash erupted when a group of deprived JCD leaders and their followers, who brought out a procession from Kakrail Nightingale intersection towards the BNP central office, met a counter procession of new committee leaders and their followers from the central office.
Fear and panic spread fast in the area, as vehicular movement stopped and local shopkeepers downed their shutters. The injured JCD leaders and pedestrians were taken to local hospitals and clinics.
Nizamuddin, former joint convenor of the Dhaka College unit of JCD, said their peaceful procession came under attack from the followers of Rajib and Akram. He said they would continue their demonstration until the JCD president and general secretary resign, and new committee is scrapped.
Insiders said a former JCD leader has taken initiatives to speak to the deprived JCD leaders.
A senior BNP leader, who requested not to be named, said the announcement of the JCD committee was not a right decision at this moment, since it may have a negative impact on the preparation for holding the council meeting of the party.
