Bangladesh has apprised diplomats of six developed countries of the security system currently in place at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon detailed the steps taken by the government with regard to ensuring security of the country’s main airport, meeting sources told The Independent. The briefing was held at state guest house Padma in the capital. The steps include the beginning of the activities of an airport security force, restriction of entry to cargo areas, refurbishment of warehouses to store cargos and initiative to purchase new security equipment.
“We have stated our position to them and they told us that they will brief their capitals about the meeting,” said an official.
The security at the airports across the world was enhanced following the downing of a Russian plane through bomb explosion in Egypt in October, last year.
Following the incident, the United Kingdom asked authorities of 38 airports in 20 countries to enhance security and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is one of them.
“We have made them known that we need training and they have assured us of looking into the issue,” said the official.
Besides, the Bangladesh side mentioned that it takes much time to purchase equipment needed to tackle the issue, said the sources, adding that the diplomats realise the problem.
Equipment worth Tk 80 crore will be purchased to enhance security and it will take three-four months to do so as purchase rules will have to be followed.
