The Jatiya Party chairman, Hussain Mohammad Ershad, has said that he has to hang his head in shame, as the JP could manage to win just one mayoral post, out of the 400 municipalities. People are making fun of the party.
"They say that since you are part of the government, why should we vote for you. It's better we vote for the ruling party," he said, summing up the JP’s debacle in the just concluded mayoral polls. Ershad was addressing a gathering of party workers and leaders at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the city yesterday (Wednesday).
"I feel aggrieved and humiliated as people say that the JP, which was in power for nine years, got just one post. Nothing can be more shameful,” he rued.
The JP chairman noted that as he was out of power, there was hardly any presence of the “langal” (plough), the party’s symbol.
As a result, he could not field candidates in all municipalities.
“But now people want to vote for the ‘langal’. The time has come. If we can return to power, people will be relieved of uncertainties as the JP, while in power, did not do any injustice to the people, did not kill people or manipulate tenders,” the former President said.
He used to think that the party would not get 151 seats, but now it appears it will be possible, the JP chief noted in an apparent reference to the next general election.
Among others, JP co-chairman GM Quader, secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader, presidum members Syed Abu Hossain Babla and Saidur Rahman Tepa were present.
