Code of conduct for both sitting, retd judges: CJ

Chief Justice SK Sinha yesterday said that sitting and retired judges, who enjoy state facilities, would abide by their code of conduct.
The Chief Justice  made the comment when Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, who recently retired as a High Court judge, appeared before the Supreme Court on behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali, who had been convicted of war crimes.

A five-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha on Tuesday began hearing on an appeal filed by Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali, challenging the verdict of a war crimes tribunal that awarded him death sentence for wartime offences.
After concluding the hearing for the second day, the apex court fixed next Monday for further hearing on the appeal. During yesterday’s hearing, Quasem Ali’s lawyer Advocate SM Shajahan place arguments before the apex court.
On November 2, 2014, the then International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Quasem Ali to death after it found him guilty on 10 charges of abduction, besides confining and torturing people during the Liberation War in 1971.
Ali later filed an appeal with the SC, challenging the tribunal’s verdict. In his appeal, Ali, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Central Executive Council cited 181 reasons for his acquittal on all charges. So far, the apex court has handed down its verdicts against six war criminals in war crimes cases.
