Shakil Ahmed shoot the fourth gold medal for Bangladesh in the ongoing 12 South Asian Games in Guwahati, India, yesterday.
Shakil stunned a strong field of Indian and Pakistani shooters to clinch the gold medal in 50-metre pistol event. He scored 187.6 points to give the Bangladeshi supporters to salute the national flag with the tune of “Aamar Sonar Bangla.”
Indian shooter OM Prakash closely followed Shakil with 187.3 points. Khan Kalimullah of Pakistan finished a distant third with 165. 9 points.
Hosts India are almost making a clean sweep in the shooting and it seemed that they would not allow any other country to close them in medal tally race. India won 18 gold out of 21 shooting gold in the last Games held in Dhaka with Bangladesh winning the remaining three,
Mabia Akter Simanta opened account for Bangladesh winning a goal medal in the women’s 43 kg weight category weightlifting. Then swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Shila clinched the second and third gold medal in the Women’s 100-metre breast stroke and 50-metre breaststroke at Dr Zakir Hussain Aquatic Complex also on Sunday.
Mahfuza, who hails from Jessore, earned the distinction of bettering a new Games record in the 50-metre breaststroke. Bangladesh so far collected a total of 43 medals including 4-gold, 10-silver and 29-bronze medals and currently placed fourth.
A 521-member contingent is representing Bangladesh in the ongoing 12th South Asian Games taking place in Guwahati and Shillong from February 5-16.
