The High Court (HC) yesterday directed the authorities concerned to submit reports within three months on what steps they have taken in accordance with the law for waste management in Dhaka north and south city corporation areas.
The chief waste management officers of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have been asked to submit the reports as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009.
The HC bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir gave the order in response to a writ petition.
The bench also issued a rule instructing the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to take necessary steps for waste management in the city corporation areas.
The DNCC and DSCC mayors, the local and rural development and environment secretaries, the director general of the Department of Environment, and the chief waste management officers of the two city corporations have been asked to reply within four weeks. The bench also fixed May 19 as the date for further hearing on the petition.
A Supreme Court lawyer, advocate Syed Mohidul Kabir, had filed a Public Interest Litigation on January 10, seeking necessary orders from the HC in this regard.
