President Abdul Hamid yesterday asked the Election Commission to work with people’s confidence and maintain its reputation as it is a constitutional body, reports UNB.
The president said this when Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and commissioners Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, Mohammad Abu Hafiz and Brigadier General (retd) Md Zabed Ali met him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, the CEC said the delegation informed the president that the Commission is planning to hold elections to 4,200 union parshads in between March and June in six phases.
They also said the commission would take all necessary steps to hold the polls in a free and fair manner.
The CEC also said the Commission has amended Union Parishad (Election Conducting) Rules 2016 and Union Parishad Election Code of Conduct-2016.
Following the recent amendment to the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009 that made the local body election partisan one partially, the Commission has changed the election rules and code of conduct. The delegation members apprised the president of the overall activities of the Election Commission and sought his cooperation in discharging their duties.
Hamid said Union Parishad is the most important local government institute at the grassroots, and asked the Commission to take steps giving topmost priority to practicing democracy.
