Demand for declaring Jessore as new division

People of Jessore district under the banner of Jessore Bibhag Andolon Parshad (Jessore Division Movement Committee) demanded declaration of Jessore as division. They also urged the government not to include Magura district in the proposed Faridpur division..
The demand came from a press briefing yesterday at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
“Jessore is heartbeat of the people of Jessore, Magura, Jhenaidah and Narail. Once the present Khulna Division was sub division of Jessore. Now Khulna has got the dignity of a division while Jessore district has been left neglected,” said Kazi Rafiqul Islam, general secretary of Jessore movement committee.
BSS adds: He said the districts of Jessore, Narail, Magura and Jhenaidah fall in greater Jessore.
There are already many divisional offices in Jessore, he added.
He mentioned that the government earns an amount of Taka 3,000 crore as revenue from Benapole land port in Jessore. Jessore is one of the five top revenue-giving districts in the country, he added.
Kazi Rafiqul Islam said despite historic and geographical importance, Jessore has now become a backward district. But this district deserves most, among all other districts, to be declared as a division, he claimed.
Other leaders said, as part of balanced development, the present government has already declared Mymensingh as a division and talks are going on about declaring Comilla and Faridpur as divisions.
They welcomed this initiative, but opposed inclusion of Magura district in proposed Faridpur division.
People of all strata in Magura have protested against this move, they said.
The leaders who were present at the press conference included Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Engineer Abdus Sattar, Hasanuzzaman Bipul, Bhabotosh Mukherjee, Engineer M.A. Wahab, Kazi Rezaul Hossain, Talukder Humayun Kabir and Nurul Quadir.
