BNP hits back at justice Choudhury

BNP yesterday protested retired Appellate Division judge Shamsuddin Choudhury’s remarks involving its chairperson and the Chief Justice, saying he is trying to make the country’s apex court controversial with his ‘imprudent’ comments, reports UNB. “His (Shamsuddin) remarks give an impression that a butcher is speaking. A prudent and judicious person can’t make such comments… he’s trying to make the apex court controversial with his reckless remarks,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. The BNP leader came up with the remarks while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office. Earlier on Monday, Shamsuddin Choudhury alleged that Chief Justice SK Sinha is working as the spokesperson of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to implement BNP’s agenda. Protesting the retired justice’s remark, Rizvi said, “If the Chief Justice is Khaleda Zia’s spokesman, the country’s people know whose spokesperson you were. He can’t tolerate it as the Chief Justice is speaking in favour of justice and the rule of law. That’s why he is making such comments.” He bemoaned that the country’s apex court never turned so controversial and disrespectful since the British period. “Judges like Shamsuddin Choudhury and Khairul Haq have made it controversial.” Rizvi also alleged that persons like justice Shamsuddin wanted to turn the court, the last resort for helpless people, into a centre for implementing the ‘ruling Awami League’s political agenda’. He alleged that the current regime has completely snatched people’s right of expression by eliminating democracy.
