Emergency response for disaster risks stressed

Early preparedness and ensuring efficient emergency response through community-based disaster management systems can substantially reduce risks of natural disasters like earthquake, losses of lives and properties, reports BSS.
The opinion came at concluding ceremony of a three-day training course organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and 'Pollishree' on 'Providing Emergency Response at Ward Levels during Disasters' at NGO Forum auditorium here on Monday afternoon.
The ward level master trainers, trained volunteers and members of Ward Disaster Management Committees participated in the course arranged under the ''Enhancing Inclusive Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh project with Oxfam funding.
The National Alliance for Risk Reduction & Response Initiatives (NARRI) Consortium has been cooperating in implementing the project to institutionalise Community-based Disaster Management Preparedness (CBDP) Model at the ward levels.
Expert trainers of Fire Service and Civil Defense, 'Pollishree', NARRI Consortium, Oxfam, Project Implementation Officers and Urban Planners of RCC conducted different sessions of the three-day training course.
Senior Station Officer of Rangpur Fire Service & Civil Defense Station Shahidul Islam, Consultant of 'Pollishree' Rezaul Karim, NARI Consortium Expert and Rahat and Oxfam Representative Simon Rahman addressed the concluding ceremony, among others. The speakers narrated about the recent major earthquakes with severest intensities and statistics of losses of human lives in different countries and suggested the possible way-outs for reducing disaster risks in the community levels and disaster-prone areas.
They put special emphasis on coordinated efforts of the GO-NGOs, community leaders, trained volunteers and public representatives in disseminating necessary knowledge among the common people to reduce losses during natural disasters.
Senior Station Officer of Rangpur Fire Service & Civil Defense Shahidul Islam called upon the volunteers for maintaining precautionary measures in ensuring emergency response management systems to minimise losses of human lives during disasters. He also mentioned that loses of human lives could be reduced substantially through conducting emergency rescue operations and providing basic first aids by trained urban volunteers to assist the victims timely on spots during and after earthquake. Boro seedling transplantation continues in Rangpur region
RANGPUR: The farmers have been continuing transplantation of Boro seedling in full swing and already completed the process on 66.45 per cent of the targeted land area in Rangpur agriculture region this season, reports BSS.
According to official sources, the government has taken adequate steps to make the Boro cultivation programme successful through ensuring smooth irrigation, supply of fuels, fertilisers, electricity and other facilities to the farmers.The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and other related departments and organisations have been providing necessary assistance to the farmers and working relentlessly as transplantation of Boro seedling is continuing smoothly.
According to DAE sources, a target of producing 20.97 lakh tonne of Boro rice from 5.02 lakh hectares of land has been fixed for Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season.
Under the programme, 7.57 lakh tonne hybrid Boro rice will be produced from 1.51 lakh hectares land, 13.35 lakh tonne high yielding variety rice from 3.49 lakh hectares and 4,255 tonne local variety Boro rice from 2,127 hectares land in the region.
