Bangladesh men’s team managed a 1-1 a draw after coming from a goal down with Bhutan to keep their hopes alive of making a place in the semifinal of the ongoing SA Games in their first match at the Guwahati Shai Regional Center yesterday.
Bangladesh could not show their real performance on the day against lowly Bhutan, who suffered a 0-5 defeat at the hands of Nepal and they (Bangladesh) had to struggle much to manage the draw, as they were trailing by a 0-1 for more than 20 minutes.
Bangladesh, who always rated one of the top contenders of the SA Games gold and even they are the defending champions, this time they could not prove them as a strong challengers to retain the gold which they won in the last edition of the Games in Dhaka.
Bangladesh on the day could not win the match due to their feeble show in front of the goal-mouth and they were also a bit unlucky while their two attempts shattered the cross piece and one goal was disallowed for controversial handball call by the assistant referee.
However, Bangladesh began the match as the day’s favourite when they could take the lead on the very third minute but the first effort on a Raihan Hassan traditional long-range throw-in of Jibon returned after hitting the cross bar and Bhutanese defender made a goal-line save of Sohel Ran’s attempt on rebounding from the cross piece.
Bhutan’s defender Jimi Dorji made another goal-line save on 17th minute and it was a good attempt of Hemanta but it was really unfortunate for Jony when Sri Lankan referee disallowed his goal calling it a handball.
Bangladesh conceded a goal against the flow of the game when Thiring Dorji sent Bhutan into lead receiving a ball from Chichu before beating Bangladesh goalkeeper (1-0).
Yasin’s header on a Hemanta corner on 31st minute went outside missing the open net. Nabib Newaz Jibon scored the equaliser on 43rd minute when his gentle touch on a Jamal Bhuiyan corner found the net. Bangladesh could have taken the lead just on 45th minute but an excellent free kick was brilliantly saved by Bhutan at the cost of a corner.
